The municipal records room had never been designed for comfort. It occupied the basement of the old town hall, where dust drifted through shafts of weak light and the radiators clicked without conviction. Sophie had spent the last three Saturdays there under the supervision of Mr Leung, sorting donation boxes from a recently closed local newspaper.
That was why the cassette stood out at once.
It lay in Drawer Three of a steel filing cabinet labelled COURT / 1998, beneath a stack of carbon-copy invoices that had no obvious reason to be there. A white sticker ran across the cassette shell in neat black handwriting.

Sophie frowned. The Vale arson case still appeared in legal studies textbooks as an example of unreliable witness testimony. Everyone in town knew the outline: factory fire, one death, contested evidence, conviction overturned years later.
"Mr Leung," Sophie called. "Was there ever an audio index for these boxes?"
"Not a useful one," he answered from the next aisle. "Why?"
"I found something labelled, but it wasn't on the paper list."
He appeared a moment later, glasses low on his nose. Sophie handed him the cassette.
He did not take it immediately.
"Put it on the table," he said.
There was nothing dramatic in the instruction, yet the temperature of the room seemed to shift.
Sophie obeyed.
Mr Leung read the label twice, then exhaled through his nose. "I had wondered whether that still existed."
"What is it?"
He looked at her for a long second before answering. "Potentially a recording that was never entered into public evidence. Potentially something already reviewed and discarded for good reason. Potentially nothing decisive at all."
Sophie stared at the cassette. "Those are very different possibilities."
"Yes," he said. "That is what makes archives dangerous in ways people do not expect."
He reached for the machine on the far shelf, then stopped himself.
"We should log it first," he said, more to himself than to Sophie.
"Before listening?"
"Especially before listening."
Sophie knew, then, that he was afraid of two opposite outcomes at once: that the recording would mean nothing, and that it would mean far too much.
From upstairs came the muffled sound of rain starting against the town hall windows. In the basement, the cassette sat between them like a small sealed argument.
"If this changes the story," Sophie said quietly, "do we have the right to leave it in a drawer?"
Mr Leung looked up.
When he answered, his voice had lost its usual librarian softness.
"That," he said, "is exactly the question."
